Leigh Buchanan Bienen Papers 1961-2009

Leigh Buchanan Bienen, senior lecturer at the Northwestern School of Law and wife of Northwestern University president Henry S. Bienen, joined the School of Law in 1995, the same year her husband took office.  She lectures in the areas of criminal law, juries, and law and social science, and has additional areas of interest and expertise in capital punishment, sex crimes, and rape reform legislation.  In addition, she is a prolific writer of fiction, mainly short stories and plays. The Leigh Bienen Papers span the years 1966 through 2009, comprise 51 boxes, and document her unusual dual career as a writer and lawyer.  The materials are arranged in six sub-series: research projects and writings, Africa, professional publications, teaching, fiction, and plays.  The content of her papers are highly varied because of Bienen's many interests.  As a teacher, public defender, legal researcher, and writer of fiction and plays, Bienen's papers consist of many different types of materials reflective each aspect of her career.
